## 1. Story overview

- Working title: The Harbor Ledger.
- Working genre and tone: harbor mystery; restrained, close observation.
- Premise: Mara Venn returns to Grayhook after Captain Ro's death, receives his ledger,
and finds her brother alive after eleven years missing. She must decide how much
to trust him while protecting a book whose purpose she does not yet understand.
- Viewpoint and tense: close third person through Mara; past tense (Chapters 06–08).
- Immediate goal: understand why Ro left her the book without surrendering her leverage.
- Central pressure: Mara wants answers; Jonas wants cooperation before the next patrol.
- Scope: three sample chapters and their supporting story notes.
- Ending: OPEN. No culprit, conspiracy, or explanation of Jonas's absence is confirmed.
- Voice: concrete harbor details; dry, precise dialogue; emotion affects actions.
Do not state another character's private motive as fact (Planning/Voice Guide).

## 2. Characters

### Mara Venn

- Former harbor clerk, 32; Jonas's older sister by three years (character notes).
- Jonas disappeared when she was 21. She left Grayhook later that year (Timeline).
- Initially wants to settle Ro's affairs and leave before the spring tide (character notes).
- At the pier: wants a trustworthy explanation without giving Jonas the ledger (Chapter 07).
- Withholds cooperation; asks narrow, practical questions when emotion is difficult.
- By the end of Chapter 07: knows Jonas is alive and has heard his claim that the book is bait.
- Does NOT yet know about the cut-out page; she has not opened the book at the pier.
- By the end of Chapter 08: has found dates eleven years apart, her surname, and a missing leaf.
- Belief to question: she initially assumes the ledger entries run in chronological order (Chapter 08).
- Voice: precise, dry, sometimes unfair. Reference: "You don't get to answer that quickly."
- Contradiction: shields Jonas from a watchman's light while refusing to trust him (Chapter 07).
- Next question: what will she demand before she lets Jonas approach the book? OPEN.

### Jonas Venn

- Mara's younger brother, 29; missing for eleven years and presumed drowned (character notes).
- Wants the ledger concealed and Mara away from the pier before the next patrol (Chapter 07).
- Withholds where he has been, why he never contacted Mara, and how he knew Ro.
- Knows the childhood memory of Mara leaving a window unlatched (Chapter 07).
- Says "The ledger is not evidence. It is bait." The claim is confirmed; its truth is unresolved.
- Voice: short practical requests; attention to immediate danger.
- Physical continuity: narrow white chin scar; pale wrist band; protects one arm in Chapter 08.
The wrist mark's cause and the arm's diagnosis are OPEN.
- By the end of Chapter 08: has placed a folded oilskin-wrapped square on a step.
Its contents have not been shown. Do not identify it as the missing leaf yet.

### Sera Holt

- Runs the chandlery near the customs bridge; an old friend of the Venn family (character notes).
- Kept Ro's ledger and hands it to Mara in Chapter 06.
- A watchman asked about Ro's effects the previous day; she gave him a comb (Timeline).
- Knows Ro expected Mara to notice different ink in his letter; knows someone asked for Mara.
- Whether she personally recognized Jonas is OPEN; she does not name him in Chapter 06.
- Under pressure: wraps parcels, counts stock, gives someone a small practical task.
- Voice reference: "I sell things, Mara. Curiosity is terrible for stock."
- Objects: broken front step, candle drawer, dented tin-hood lantern, Mara's copper (character notes).

## 3. Places

### Grayhook and the old pier

- A working port around an old tidal basin; customs faces the bridge, warehouses stand east
of it, and the disused pier extends past the last inhabited quay (Grayhook notes).
- Pier continuity: six sound boards, rotten seventh board, far bollard, ladder on the outer
wall, rope through a rusted guide ring (Chapter 07).
- Watchmen's light from the customs roof can expose someone upright near the water.
- Rain, timber, rope, metal, and lamplight matter to Mara's immediate choices.
- The bell beneath the pier can be felt through the boards. Its origin is OPEN.
- Exact walking distances and minutes between whistles: OPEN. Do not invent a countdown.

### Sera's chandlery

- Near the customs bridge; broken front step and street-facing shutters (Grayhook notes).
- The ledger was kept beneath the counter. Ro's letter and the lantern matter in Chapter 06.

### Warehouse steps

- Two turns from the customs bridge; partly sheltered by corrugated iron (Grayhook notes).
- Mara waits here and opens the ledger after the third whistle (Chapter 08).
- The lantern moves from behind a crate to the ground, then between the siblings.
- Jonas sits on the lowest dry step and later leaves the wrapped square between them.

## 4. Timeline

| When | Event | Source / status | Knowledge or reveal |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Eleven years earlier | Jonas, 18, disappears; Mara, 21, leaves later that year | Timeline / CONFIRMED | Do not reverse these events |
| Eight days before Chapter 06 | Ro is found dead in the east channel | Timeline / CONFIRMED | Mara knows he is dead |
| Day before Chapter 06 | Watchman questions Sera about Ro's effects | Timeline / CONFIRMED | Sera conceals the ledger |
| Chapter 06, before second whistle | Sera gives Mara the book and lantern | Chapter 06 / CONFIRMED | Different ink in Ro's letter is noticed |
| Chapter 07, between second and third whistles | Mara finds Jonas below the pier and keeps the book | Chapter 07 / CONFIRMED | He calls the ledger bait |
| Chapter 08, after third whistle | Mara opens the book at the warehouse steps | Chapter 08 / CONFIRMED | Dates, surname, and missing page revealed |
| End of Chapter 08 | A fourth whistle sounds | Chapter 08 / CONFIRMED | Unexpected signal; explanation OPEN |

## 5. World rules and important objects

### The ledger

- Narrow book, faded green binding, salt-damaged spine, brass clasp, cut leather loop.
Something clicks inside its back cover (The Ledger notes; Chapter 06).
- Ownership: Ro arranged for Mara to receive it; Sera passes it on; Mara retains possession
through Chapters 06–08. Jonas asks for it but does not receive it.
- Reveal order: existence and handover in 06; Jonas's warning in 07; contents examined in 08.
- The reader sees cargo entries, an eleven-year date jump, the name Venn, and a removed leaf.
- OPEN: who compiled the entries, who removed the page, what is in the cover, why Venn appears.
- A local edit must not add a culprit, a list of conspirators, or the meaning of the oilskin parcel.

### Harbor signals and access

- Watchmen signal from the customs roof; boots on its iron stair are audible (Chapter 07).
- The third whistle sets the meeting time at the warehouse steps (Chapters 07–08).
- The fourth whistle is unexpected. No emergency code or supernatural rule is established.
- No exact patrol interval is confirmed. Pressure comes from footsteps and visible light.

## 6. Chapter events and continuity

| Chapter | What changes? | New fact or reveal | State at exit | Open thread |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 06: The Letter | Mara receives Ro's effects and heads to the pier | Letter's different ink; ledger handover | Mara carries ledger and Sera's lantern | Who asked for her? |
| 07: Rainy Harbor | Mara recognizes Jonas and helps hide him | Private window memory; bait claim | Mara has the closed book; meeting arranged at warehouse steps | His absence; who approaches? |
| 08: The Missing Page | Mara reads the ledger; Jonas joins her | Venn entry, missing leaf, wrapped square, fourth whistle | Mara still has the book; parcel sits between them unopened | Parcel contents and whistle meaning |

Scene check: the stranger in Chapter 08 has no visible badge. Do not call him a confirmed
watchman. The child's memory is an unlatched window, not a locked door.

## 7. Open questions and planned decisions

| Question | Current possibilities | Decision needed by | Status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Why did Jonas disappear? | None selected; absence is intentional | Before writing the explanation | OPEN |
| Who removed the leaf? | Not established by possession or suspicion | Before assigning responsibility | OPEN |
| Is the oilskin square the missing leaf? | Possible, unconfirmed | When the parcel is opened on the page | OPEN |
| What caused Jonas's wrist mark? | Mara considers a watch or restraint | Before a later causal reference | OPEN |
| Who is the unbadged stranger? | Identity unconfirmed | Before a scene depends on his authority | OPEN |
| What does the fourth whistle mean? | No explanation selected | Before the next scene uses the signal | OPEN |

## Change log

| Draft checkpoint | Changed fact | Evidence | Recheck |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| After Chapter 07 | Jonas's survival becomes known to Mara and the reader | Pier encounter | Do not give Mara later ledger knowledge here |
| After Chapter 08 | Add removed page and Venn entry to Mara's knowledge | Warehouse steps | Earlier references to contents; any later claim about the unopened parcel |

Maintenance example: discovering a missing leaf changes Mara's knowledge and creates a
question about its removal. It does not establish that Jonas took it. Keep those entries separate.
